Gentle Care for Senior Oral Care

As we age, reduced saliva, receding gums, and sensitive teeth can make everyday oral care more challenging. For seniors in Singapore, small dental issues may also become costly when left untreated.

CHAS 2026 enhancements and Flexi-MediSave, up to S$400/year from mid-2026, can help offset clinical costs. But daily prevention is still the cheaper first step.

Enzim 40 Plus supports moisture with colostrum, soothes sensitivity with potassium nitrate, and helps maintain bacterial balance through its enzyme system.

Ageing Oral Care What Happens to Your Mouth After 55?

As we age, the mouth naturally produces less saliva, gums may recede, and enamel becomes thinner over time. Medications commonly taken after 55 can also worsen dry mouth, making teeth and gums more vulnerable to irritation, sensitivity, and decay.

In Singapore, the population is ageing rapidly, with 1 in 4 citizens expected to be aged 65 and above by 2030. This makes everyday oral care and prevention increasingly important for maintaining comfort, function, and long-term oral health.

What Happens to
Your Mouth After 55?

How It Works

After 55, oral changes can build up at the same time. Saliva flow may reduce, often due to medications or dehydration, making it harder for the mouth to neutralise acids and control harmful germs. Gum recession can expose sensitive root surfaces, while thinner enamel makes teeth more reactive to cold, sweet, or acidic triggers.

Why It Matters in Singapore

Singapore’s population is ageing fast, by 2030, around 1 in 4 citizens will be aged 65 and above. This makes daily prevention more important, because small oral issues can become more costly clinical problems later.

Small Daily Care, Big Treatment Savings

A tube of Enzim 40 Plus costs S$11.80 and lasts about 8 weeks, which works out to around the price S$77 a year for daily preventive care.

In comparison, just one dental filling at a non-CHAS dental clinic in Singapore may cost around S$80–150. That means taking care of your teeth every day can be much cheaper than waiting until treatment is needed.

Dr Reza Andriani

"After 55, the mouth can become more vulnerable to dryness, gum recession, and sensitivity. Reduced saliva makes it harder to protect teeth and gums from acids and harmful bacteria. That is why daily prevention is important. Enzim 40 Plus supports mouth moisture with colostrum, helps soothe sensitivity with potassium nitrate, and works with the mouth’s natural defence through its enzyme system."

 Is 40 Plus appropriate for a 75-year-old?

Yes. Enzim 40 Plus is suitable for mature adults, including seniors, especially those experiencing dry mouth, tooth sensitivity, or a need for gentler daily oral care. Its SLS-free formula is enriched with colostrum, active enzymes and proteins, and potassium nitrate to support moisture, natural saliva defence, and sensitivity relief. For seniors with complex medical conditions, swallowing difficulties, or persistent mouth problems, it is best to check with a dentist or doctor first.

Can seniors with dentures use it?

Yes, but mainly for natural teeth, gums, and the mouth area. If the senior still has remaining natural teeth, Enzim 40 Plus can be used as a daily toothpaste. Dentures should be removed and cleaned separately with a denture cleaner or dentist-recommended method, then rinsed well before wearing again. The ADA also advises not using toothpaste to clean dentures because some toothpastes may be too harsh for denture surfaces.

Does Medisave cover toothpaste?

No. MediSave does not cover toothpaste or daily oral-care products. In Singapore, MediSave is generally used for eligible clinical dental treatments, not retail products. From mid-2026, seniors aged 60 and above may use Flexi-MediSave for selected dental treatments such as root canal treatments and permanent crowns at eligible providers, but not toothpaste.

 What about receding gums?

Toothpaste cannot reverse or regrow receding gums, but it can support daily care around exposed roots and sensitive areas. Enzim 40 Plus helps by combining potassium nitrate for sensitivity, colostrum for moisture, and an SLS-free enzyme system for a gentler oral environment. If gum recession is worsening, bleeding, or causing pain, a dental check-up is important.

Is it safe alongside blood-thinners?

For most people, toothpaste is a topical daily-care product and does not work like a blood-thinner. However, people taking blood-thinners may notice their gums bleed more easily during brushing or flossing. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, brush gently, and speak to a dentist or doctor if bleeding is frequent, heavy, or does not stop quickly.

How long before sensitivity relief?

Some users may feel relief sooner, but sensitivity toothpaste works best with consistent use. Brush twice daily and give it at least 2 to 4 weeks to assess the difference. If sensitivity is sharp, worsening, or does not improve, it may be a sign of decay, gum recession, cracked teeth, or another dental issue that needs professional care.

Can caregivers apply it?

Yes. Caregivers can help apply a small amount of Enzim 40 Plus onto a soft toothbrush and gently brush the senior’s teeth and gumline twice daily. Encourage the person to spit out after brushing and avoid swallowing. For seniors with dentures, remove the dentures first, clean the mouth gently, and clean the dentures separately.

How does it compare to mainstream sensitivity brands?

Most mainstream sensitivity toothpastes focus mainly on sensitivity relief. Enzim 40 Plus goes further by combining potassium nitrate for sensitive teeth, colostrum for moisture support, and an enzyme-protein system that works with saliva’s natural antibacterial defence. It is designed not just for sensitivity, but for the wider oral needs of mature adults, including dryness, bacterial balance, and gentler daily care.
